BABY CHAM HAS NEW MEXICO LOCKED !!!
Baby
Cham does it again!!! Last month's #1 with Nina Sky dropped down to the
runner-up spot, yet his massive "Hood" on Dave Kelly's BAD GAL
riddim climbed from #4 to the pole-position. As if that wasn't enough:
his combination with new singing sensation Toi occupies #5 as well. Further
tunes on Dave Kelly's latest masterpiece include a crucial track by Jamaica's
top female artist of the hour Macka Diamond who claims: "Mi no chase
money, money chase me!", as well as another gal-anthem by veteran
Cobra who has all kinds of classic lyrics, like : "A gal waan drama,
tell her: start it! Tell her you will print out your gucci shoes in her
face, mek a gal know yuh know karate." Together with RED ALERT, this
is the BEST dancehall riddim of 2004! Irresistable beat, irresistible
groove and crucial tunes, even though just a few of the dancehall superstars
voiced the project. Right
on the heels of the BAD GAL is Black Chiney's massive KOPA, which has
been added to the heavy rotation of NM top hip-hop stations. Typically,
only the Nina Sky tune (the mix without Baby Cham, of course) is being
featured and my fears/predictions from about a year ago have unfortunately
been confirmed. While hip-hop stations and dj's here in NM are more than
willing to USE dancehall reggae to hype up their shows/sessions, NONE
of them have been willing to do ANYTHING to help our music progress any
further. They just BLINDLY follow (have to follow?) the trends being set
in places like New York and Miami. While bringing some of our artists
into the spotlight, these same artists are completely dropped/ignored
after a given hype is over, rather than following up on them to see what
they are really about. The typical combination of hip-hop and dancehall
dj's/sound-systems playing TOGETHER is also completely absent here in
NM, with hip-hop dj's claiming that they don't feel dancehall is what
the mainstream crowds are craving. Still, they play the big dancehall
radio hits of the past two years at EVERY session to rile the massive
up but refuse to even help take things to another level by featuring further
material by the same artists. Pure bloodclaat this and I urge everyone
who is sick & tired of this to start calling your local hip-hop/r'n
b stations and DEMAND weekly dancehall programs that go beyond what they
have been trying to feed you. Back to the KOPA: further killer tracks
on the riddim by Elephant Man and Capleton clock in at #4 and #6 this
time. John
John's CHICATITA riddim has been liscenced by Greensleeves and two monsters
from Capleton and Bounty Killer together with Angel Doolas chart this
month. Nice beat which reminds me of the Jamaican re-creation of George
Michael's FAITH riddim from the late 90's. Christopher Birch helped to
create the KLYMAXX for Juke Boxx Records, which is represented by Kesheira
and Shaggy, while Don Corleon and Nigel Staff lent a hand or two to build
H2O's new SLOW BOUNCE, which, in turn, is represented by the mentally
ill Ward 21. Both riddims are excellent and should get further tracks
in these charts in the coming months. That's
it from New Mexico for this month. More time |
